Did You Know? Essential Oils & Your AC

Yes, I used to be one of ‘those’ people, who bought the expensive plug-in-air fresheners and room sprays, full of chemicals, trying to get the awful, stale and musty smells out of my home. What??? I know… but, it’s really true.

So you may ask, how else can you get rid of that stale, musty smell in your home? Well let me tell you, there is a better, more efficient way: add some essential oils to your HVAC system’s air filter!

Benefits of Essential Oils

So the question I had was is adding essential oils to your HVAC system is safe? Actually, they’re safer than regular, air fresheners.

They’re all natural, whereas some plug-in fresheners can be full of chemicals that can pollute your air.

They’re a better value for your money, too.

How It Works

First, buy a new HVAC filter. Get one with a high MERV rating, to clean your air thoroughly and eliminate allergens and other contaminants.

Pick your essential oil fragrance. Don’t be afraid to be daring when choosing your scent.

Not sure what oil to use? Mix it up!

Make your own combination of essential oils, for example use 10 drops Lemon and 10 drops Lavender together.

Essential oils that I like to use are Lemongrass or OnGuard.

Lemongrass – can clean the air in your home. It reduces the presence of airborne bacteria and viruses and allergens. It also boosts confidence, self-esteem, reduces anxiety, and fights depression.

Onguard blend– helps purify the air and can be very energizing and uplifting.

Once you have selected your scent, drip 15 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oils onto your air filter. Make sure you distribute the drops evenly around the filter.

Put NO MORE THAN 20 DROPS of essential oil on your filter. I recommend starting with about 15 at most.

The scent should last for about 30 days, which is perfect because your filters should be changed every 30 – 45 days.
